The Honest Nest
When Fifi accidentally breaks Grandpa's birdhouse, she has to decide whether to hide her mistake or tell the truth.
Fifi and Momo were tossing a ball in the yard. 'Catch, Momo!' Fifi called, and she threw it high. The ball bumped the birdhouse Grandpa had just painted, and it fell with a crack.
'Oh no, ' Fifi whispered. Momo sniffed the wooden pieces and asked, 'What will the birds do without a house?'
Fifi looked around. She could hide the pieces behind the bush. She started to scoop them up, but Momo nosed her hand.
'Will Grandpa be sad we broke it?' Momo asked. Fifi remembered how carefully Grandpa had painted the little door. Momo tried to balance on the fallen roof, wobbled, and jumped away as dust poofed up. Despite her worry, Fifi giggled. Then she took a breath. 'I have to tell Grandpa, ' she said.
She found Grandpa watering the flowers. 'Grandpa, I broke the birdhouse by accident, ' she said quietly. Grandpa knelt down and hugged her.
'Thank you for telling me. Let's fix it together, ' he said. They mixed wood glue and set the pieces. Grandpa let her hold the roof while he nailed. They hung it back on the tree. A robin landed on the perch and chirped. Fifi smiled, watching the bird settle in.
