The Bloom on the Bus

Fifi and Momo are on a bumpy bus ride when they notice someone who needs a seat more than they do.

Fifi clutched Momo as the bus bumped along. 'Whee!' she cried. Dad smiled, holding the rail.

The bus halted and an older woman climbed on, hugging a bulging cloth bag. She glanced around, but no seat was free. She grabbed a pole, her arms shaking. Momo nuzzled Fifi. 'She looks tired, ' he whispered. Fifi watched the woman's weary eyes.

Fifi's heart pounded. She wanted to help, but her legs felt glued. Momo gave her a tiny lick. 'You can do it, ' he said.

Fifi took a breath, slid down, and touched the woman's sleeve. 'Please, sit here.' The woman startled. The bus jerked, and Fifi wobbled. The woman steadied her, chuckling. 'Thank you, little duck. You're very kind.' Fifi's shyness melted.

The woman settled in the seat. Fifi stood tall, gripping Dad's hand. The woman dug into her bag, pulled out a bright napkin, and folded it into a flower. She handed it to Fifi. 'A bloom for a bloom.' Fifi beamed.

At their stop, she hopped off, waving the paper flower. Momo trotted beside her, tail dancing, as the woman waved from the window.
